The Elements

Fire, Earth, Air and Water are not four groups of signs: they are the substance each sign is made of. The element says how a sign meets the world — by impulse, by matter, by thought or by feeling. Every chart contains all four, in unequal measure, and that imbalance is one of the first things an astrologer reads.

Each element is shared by three signs, one per modality: this is why the signs are twelve, and why no two of them are alike.
