Water is the element of the signs that perceive what is unspoken. It stands for emotion, memory and intuition. In a chart, the weight of Water measures how much of the personality reads the world through feeling rather than through fact.

The element that remembers: what happened is never entirely over.
Water perceives the current beneath the surface. It has no edges of its own and takes the shape of whatever holds it — which is its gift and its danger.
Interpretation
Water is the element of emotional perception. The three water signs share a porousness to atmosphere — Cancer keeps, Scorpio penetrates, Pisces dissolves — and they know things before being able to explain how. In a natal chart the amount of Water says how much the person is affected by what is not said.
Abundant Water gives empathy, imagination and long memory, and the difficulty of telling one's own feeling from the feeling in the room. Scarce Water gives clean boundaries and emotional resilience, and often a real awkwardness with grief, one's own and other people's: the feeling arrives late, or as a physical symptom, or not at all.
