Ascendant

The Ascendant is the degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at the exact time and place of birth. It governs the physical body, the social mask and the first impression made on others, and it shifts sign roughly every two hours — the reason birth time matters. Its ruler is traditionally taken as the ruler of the whole chart.

Overview

The eastern horizon: where the sky becomes visible and life begins.

The Ascendant is the point of dawn in the chart — the sign rising in the east at the exact minute of birth, and with it the instinctive style with which you greet the world.

Mythology

The Greeks called this point the Horoskopos, the 'hour marker': so decisive was it that it eventually lent its name to the whole art — the horoscope is, literally, the watching of the rising hour. Hellenistic astrologers took it as the helm of the chart, the place from which the houses are counted. In the mythic imagination the eastern horizon is the gate of birth: where the chariot of Helios emerges from the ocean of night, and where each life, like each day, first shows its face.

Interpretation

The Ascendant is the degree of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It governs the physical body, the social mask and the immediate impression made on others — the interface between the inner life and the world. Because the rising sign shifts roughly every two hours, it is the most personal, time-sensitive point in the chart: the reason the birth time matters. Its sign describes the instinctive manner of engaging with anything new; its ruler is traditionally taken as the ruler of the whole chart.
