Imum Coeli
The Imum Coeli is the lowest point of the natal chart, exactly opposite the Midheaven, marking the sky's midnight at birth. It governs origin, family, home and the private foundations of life. Where the Midheaven is the summit striven toward, the Imum Coeli is the ground stood upon — the place a life returns to for renewal.
I take root.
Overview
The lowest point: the root from which the visible life grows.
The Imum Coeli is the degree at the base of the chart — the midnight of the sky at birth, and the symbol of origin, interiority and home.
Mythology
The Latin name means 'the bottom of the sky', translating the Greek Hypogeion, 'beneath the earth'. Here the Sun stands at local midnight, invisible, traversing the underworld of the old cosmologies — the nocturnal sea over which Ra sailed, the hidden half of every solar journey. The tradition assigned this angle to ancestors, land and the grave: the triple ground of a life. What the Midheaven displays at noon, the Imum Coeli keeps in the dark: the private hearth on which the public flame depends.
Interpretation
The Imum Coeli is the lowest point of the chart, always exactly opposite the Midheaven. It governs origin, family, the home, and the private foundations of life: ancestry, the atmosphere of childhood, what we carry inside without showing it. Planets here work at the root, shaping the sense of belonging and the inner base from which ambition sets out. Where the MC is the summit we strive toward, the IC is the ground beneath our feet — the quality of a life's beginnings, and the place it returns to for renewal.
