House I
The First House of the natal chart governs identity as it appears: the physical body, the temperament, and the first impression made on others. Its cusp is the Ascendant, which is why the sign here sets the style of the whole chart. Planets in the First House colour the entire personality and are expressed openly.
identity, appearance, beginning
Overview
How you present yourself to the world.
The body, the temperament, the instinctive imprint with which you begin everything. The First House is the threshold between being and appearing — the mask that is already substance.
Mythology
In the Hellenistic tradition the First House was the Horoskopos, the 'hour marker': the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth, from which the whole chart took its bearings — and which eventually gave the word 'horoscope' to the world. Medieval astrologers called it Vita, Life. It is the house of dawn and of beginnings, the point where sky touches earth, and tradition assigned it to Mercury as his place of joy: the quick intelligence that greets the world first.
Interpretation
The First House describes the vehicle of identity: the physical body, the appearance, the spontaneous manner that others meet before anything else. Planets placed here colour the whole personality and are expressed openly, without mediation. Its cusp is the Ascendant, which is why the sign on the First House defines the style of the entire chart: the way vitality is packaged, the first impression given and received, and the instinctive strategy with which every new experience is approached.
