The Modalities
Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable describe not what a sign is made of but how it moves. Each modality gathers four signs, one per element, and corresponds to a moment of the season: its opening, its full height, its dissolution. Where the element gives the substance, the modality gives the tempo.
Four elements by three modalities make exactly twelve combinations: the twelve signs, each one a pair that occurs only once.
